What can occur if bolts are not torqued properly?

Uneven loading created by unevenly tightened head bolts can distort the head. Over a period of time, this may cause the head to take a permanent set. So any head that has not been properly torqued should be checked for flatness prior to installing a new head gasket.

Should head bolts be oiled?

As a rule, the threads and underside of the head on most standard automotive head bolts should be lubricated with motor oil before the bolts are installed. The torque values specified by the engine manufacturer are typically based on oiled threads and fasteners – not dry fasteners.

Are studs stronger than bolts?

Main studs Studs provide the ability to obtain much more accurate torque values because the studs don’t twist during tightening as do bolts. Because the studs remain stationary during nut tightening, the studs stretch in one axis alone, providing much more even and accurate clamping forces.

Can you reuse 302 head bolts?

You can’t reuse them. They stretch after the first use. Get a manual for your car. In the manual it will tell you not to reuse those bolts and it will tell you the correct way to do things.

Can I reuse LS head bolts?

On a GM LS engine, the cylinder head bolts are TTY and cannot be re-used. The connecting rod bolts are also TTY, but can be tightened up to three times for bearing checking. The balancer bolt is also a torque-to-yield fastener. The intake manifold, rocker arm, and rear cover bolts can be reused.

Can you reuse Vortec head bolts?

The cylinder head mounting bolts may be reused if they are not damaged in the threads or show neck-down or stretch condition. The bolts should be thoroughly cleaned of sealer before inspection and installation. Cleaned bolts should have a coating of GM sealing compound Part #1052080 applied to the threaded area only.

Are Vortec head bolts TTY?

Like most recent engines, the Vortec is equipped with torque-to-yield (TTY) head bolts. Over time, the head bolt threads may seize to the corresponding engine block internal threads.

Are Chevy 350 head bolts re usable?

Re: Head bolts – reuse or always use new? SBC bolts are re-usable unless you can see a defect re-use them and dont worry about it.

Can you reuse a stretch bolt?

stretch to ensure proper securing when tightened down. (Bolts with Specification: Torque plus Angle). Some of these bolts can be reused, if you torque them to the same torque that you would use for a normal bolt of the same size, pitch, lubrication factor, and strength rating.

Do Felpro head gaskets need to be Retorqued?

Felpro says no retorquing necessary. However we have found that in race engines the life of a head gasket could benefit from retorquing.

Do you need to Retorque ARP head studs?

ARP recommends not doing a re-torque on a hot engine. Do I need lube on my bolts or studs? We recommend using ARP Ultra-Torque lube to ensure an even, accurate clamp load and to prevent thread galling.

Should I use Loctite on head bolts?

NO! You can use blue locktite in alot of places, but your headbolts are not one of them. Headbolts need to be brought up to torque specs in stages, and in a specific order (see a motor manual), and then re-torqued after the engine has been run for awhile to make sure they are all at the proper torque value.

Should I replace flywheel bolts?

They don’t have to be replaced but it is cheap insurance and yes, use loctite on the bolts. Also very important – torque them down in three passes – 1/3 torque, 2/3 torque, full torque in a star pattern.

Can you reuse ARP head studs Cummins?

Yes, you can reuse them. No need to send them in.
